Dublin is the first city in Ireland to embrace the spirit of the global campaign of Earth Hour 2008. The Lord Mayor of Dublin, Cllr Paddy Bourke has been instrumental in gaining the support of city council representatives to endorse the campaign. He is now working with the city council officials and the Chamber of Commerce in Dublin, to raise awareness of the campaign and to ensure that the campaign secures support from the business community. Speaking about the Earth Hour campaign he said "I am thrilled that as Dublin Lord Mayor, I will be leading our capital city in its I would urge businesses and homes to join in and take part in the campaign.", this campaign is important and everyone from citizens up to Government has a duty to do what they can against global warming. It is up to us all to do what we can to reduce our CO2 emissions. Through one simple action, turning off our lights for an hour, we can deliver a powerful message about the need for action."
The city of Dublin recognizes the threat climate change poses to life around the world and in these days of uncertainty about the future of our planet's environment, any energy consumption gives the future that much hope for a more sustainable tomorrow.
Earth Hour gives life to the belief that one person, one home, one business; one city for just one hour can make the difference necessary to turn the tide against climate change. As an American politician and activist John W. Gardner once said, "The cynic says, ?One man can't do anything.' I say, ?Only one man can do anything.".
Individual effort on the part of the citizens of Dublin and other cities and countries around the world will ultimately produce collective progress. The Dublin Dockalnds Development Authority is supporting this event and urges local residents and the business communities to play their part in support ing Earth Hour by switching their light off for 1 hour on 29th March 08 from 8pm to 9pm.
