Parents in Education Certificate Course

The Project
Understanding that parents often want the opportunity to learn about the education system and to be in a position to support their children’s education development, the Docklands Authority established the Parents in Education (PIE) course.

How it Works
The Parents in Education is a three year programme delivered by the National College of Ireland. Designed to improve parents self confidence and education skills, the course pays particular attention to the parents’ relationship with the children’s schools and their understanding of the importance of further education.

The Right Result
Since 1998 one hundred and fifty eight Docklands parents have undertaken the course, with 49 of them completing all three modules.

An impact assessment of Docklands graduates of the Parents in Education programme was completed 2003, and highlighted some very encouraging statistics. Almost 90% of participants said the course helped their self confidence; over 96 % said that it improved their relationship with their children’s school, and 40% of those who completed the course have participated on a school/parent committee.

Docklands Fact

300 years ago there were no houses in the Docklands with the exception of the small fishing hamlet of Ringsend. Most of the land was underwater with the occasional watchtower, customs outpost and pilgrimage hospice along the waterfront.
