Maritime Festival selected as finalist in Marketing awards

The Docklands Maritime Festival has been selected as a finalist in the Public Relations Campaign category of the All Ireland Marketing Awards 2009. The Awards, which recognise the most effective marketing campaigns in Ireland, will be presented at a Gala Dinner on Thursday 14 May in the Burlington Hotel.

The Docklands Maritime Festival was developed to give people a reason to visit and interact with Dublin's Docklands, and in particular to attract families to visit the area. It started as a low key event in 2004 attracting just 10,000 visitors. Since then it has been built through a targeted PR campaign to the stage where it is now the largest event in the Docklands calendar attracting over 130,000 people from Dublin and further afield and generating widespread positive publicity for Docklands.

Commenting on the news that the Docklands Maritime Festival had been selected as a finalist for the AIM Awards, Loretta Lambkin, Director of Marketing at the Docklands Authority said that the event also generated significant economic benefits for local businesses.
"Importantly the high numbers of people attending the Maritime Festival bring additional business to the shops and restaurants in the Docklands area. Last year, for example, footfall increased by more than 500% in the chq building over the weekend", she said.
Awareness of ‘Dublin Docklands' now stands at 96%, compared to just 26% in 2003. In recent research the main reason for visiting the Docklands was given as an event, with the Maritime Festival by far the most popular. The same research found that peoples' experience of the Maritime Festival was extremely positive, with 60% considering it to be ‘superb'. This view was echoed by media with positive coverage and comments online, in press and on radio and TV programmes.

This year's Maritime Festival will take place over the June Bank Holiday weekend from Friday 29 May to Monday 1 June. Let's hope the weather is as good as last year when the sun shone for three days.
