Football Greats Teach Docklands Kids a Trick or Two!

Niall Quinn, John Aldridge, Alan Kelly, Chris Nichol and Don Givens take part in the Docklands Festival of Football

Niall Quinn and his expert coaching team will be teaching soccer skills to children from Dublin ’s Docklands during the 5th Annual Docklands Festival of Football.  This very special event, which takes place from Tuesday, 10 April to Thursday, 12 April 2007, has been developed to help young people from the Docklands to develop their soccer skills and become more confident and accomplished players.

The expert coaching team will be headed up by Niall Quinn, former Republic of Ireland International player and Chairman of Sunderland F.C.; Alan Kelly, Republic of Ireland goalkeeping coach; John Aldridge, former Republic of Ireland International player; Don Givens, Irish U-21 Manager and former Ireland striker and Chris Nichol former Northern Ireland International player.

Niall Quinn, who has been involved in the Festival since its inception, said he was delighted to help these young players develop their skills.  “It’s great to have the opportunity to work with these kids and help them gain confidence in their soccer skills, I’m delighted to be involved with the Festival for five years now and I’m sure it’ll continue to go from strength to strength.” he said.

The Dublin Docklands Festival of Football, which is taking place at Tolka Rovers Sports Complex, Griffith Avenue, Dublin 9, is open to 8 - 13 year olds from the Dublin Docklands area.  Since it first began in 2003, it has attracted over 400 young Docklanders.

Gerry Kelly, Director of Social Regeneration for the Docklands Authority, believes the Festival has significant benefits for the whole community and not just those children who take part.  “The Festival is a great opportunity for these young people to learn new skills, make new friends and perhaps even nurture future sporting careers.  In addition, the event is also a very positive experience for the friends, teachers and parents of the participants.  We look forward to continuing the Dublin Docklands Festival of Football in the years to come.”

Paul Maloney, Chief Executive of the Docklands Authority feels that the Festival is an excellent example of the effectiveness of the Docklands Authority’s social regeneration programme, “Sport is an integral part of children’s physical and social development and the level of enthusiasm amongst the children and the wider Docklands community for this initiative over the past four years assures us that it will continue to be a success for many years to come.”
