June Events in Dublin's Docklands

 

The Docklands Maritime Festival is not on this year but planning for the Tall Ships Race 2012 is under way and, in the meantime, there are plenty of reasons to enjoy the River Liffey and its surrounds. From energetic runs to invigorating swims, leisurely cycles in the city or a tasty alfresco lunch, there are plenty of reasons to visit the Docklands this summer.

 

Docklands Swim June 4th, 2011
Swimmers from all over Dublin will take to the water in the annual Docklands Swim, which will take place on Saturday, June 4th, 2011 in association with Jurys Inn. This enjoyable but challenging 1.5 km swim is organized by the NAC Masters Swimming Club and is the first swim of a series of 30 races over the Summer. The men's race takes off at noon from the Dublin City Moorings followed by the women's half an hour later.

Docklands Run June 21st, 2011
The 11th Docklands Run, brought to you this year by TriEvents, will take place at 7:45pm on the longest day of the year. Starting at Grand Canal Square, the 8 kilometre route will take participants around the Docklands and there will be a range of prizes for the winners and goodies for all finishers. This year entrants will get technical t-shirts and can attend an Expo at the chq building on June 20th and 21st and a post race party and barbeque to power runners into dance mode after the race.

Dublin Bike to Work June 22nd, 2011
As part of National Bike Week, Dublin City Council will be hosting Bike to Work Day. This event will consist of a leisurely lunchtime cycle through the streets of Dublin taking in the Samuel Beckett Bridge, City Quay, Merrion Square, The Pepper Canister Church and some of the new cycle routes along the Grand Canal.

Participants in the cycle will gather in Grand Canal Square in the Dublin Docklands before setting off on the approximately 30 minute cycle. Register early to get a goodie bag filled with cycling enthusiast's gadgets and a chance to win an Apple iPad2.

Irish Village Markets at Spencer Dock Every Wednesday
Central Square at Spencer Dock hosts Irish Village Markets every Wednesday from 1130am to 2pm. A selection of some of the food stalls on offer at this lunchtime market include The Market Burger, Mediterranean Grill, paella, Lebanese falafels, Kanum Thai cuisine, Chinese noodles, A Taste of Italy and Spain and Hungarian goulash. Grab a picnic blanket and enjoy live jazz music from our resident Saxophone player Joey and unwind during your lunch break.


Concerts and Shows
The O2, the Grand Canal Theatre and the Convention Centre together bring some of the biggest names in rock, pop, country and Broadway bests to Dublin. Highlights this summer include Peter Pan, Grease, JEDWARD and Joseph & the Amazing Techni-colour Dream Coat at the Grand Canal Theatre. Performing at the O2 are Duran Duran, Glee Live, Dolly Parton, and James Taylor while the Convention Centre is the venue for David Gray; the East meets West Philippine Gala Concert and the Midsummer Moonwalk in aid of The Our Lady's Hospice.
